Detroit is the largest city in the state of and the 11th largest city in the US. The city has traditionally been associated with the automobile industry with the top three US auto manufacturers having their headquarters in the metropolitan area.

Detroit is located along and named after the Detroit River which connects Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie. The city was founded by the French in 1701. In 1805 when the Michigan Territory was organized, Detroit was named its capital. It was incorporated as a city in 1815.

Detroit has a seasonal temperate climate characterized by hot summers and cold winters. The Great Lakes tend to moderate the extremes, however, with temperatures rarely exceeding 100º or dipping below 0º.

There are several professional sports teams in Detroit including the Detroit Tigers (MLB, AL), the Detroit Lions (NFL), the Detroit Red Wings (NHL), and the Detroit Pistons (NBA).
